Entering the 2023-24 season, Ray Looze is in his 19th year at the helm of both the men's and women's swimming programs and his 22nd year of mentoring the men at Indiana University. Looze has achieved unparalleled success as both a coach and a world-class swimmer, accomplishments that he carried into his tenure with the Hoosiers since his hiring in June 2002. Since arriving in Bloomington, Looze has made it his mission to return Indiana swimming to the elite level it had maintained throughout the 1960s and 70s – To say that he has made significant progress at IU would be an understatement. Looze has been named Big Ten Coach of the Year 12 times during his tenure – seven times for men and five times for women. Looze was also named CSCAA National Swimming Coach of the Year in 2018. Looze has helped guide the Hoosiers to 11 Big Ten team championships – five for women and six for men. Nationally, Looze has returned the men’s team to national powerhouse status – Over the last five years, only four men’s programs have consistently finished top six nationally: Cal, Texas, Florida and the Indiana Hoosiers. The women’s program has surged into national prominence as well, capturing program record seventh-place finishes in 2016 and 2023. The Indiana men repeated as Big Ten Champions in 2022-23 – their fifth conference title in seven seasons – after dominating their meet, totaling a 1,595.5 mark to outscore the field by over 300 points. Cory Chitwood enters his fifth season on Indiana’s coaching staff. He currently serves as associate head coach under head swimming coach Ray Looze and works primarily with IU’s surging distance group. Chitwood has established himself as one of the top distance coaches in the country and has served as head coach of the U.S. Open Water national team at both the 2022 and 2024 World Championships. Between assistant and head coaching roles, Chitwood has been a national team coach for nine years. During his time at IU, the men’s team has won two Big Ten Championships, while the women have finished top-three all four seasons. At eight conference meets, Indiana has produced the Big Ten Swimmer of the Championships in five of those – including all four of the men’s championships. IU swimmers have combined for 42 conference titles over the last four seasons. John Long, Jr., enters his fifth season on Indiana head swimming coach Ray Looze’s staff in 2023-24. Long currently serves as associate head coach. The year before, Burns became the first Hoosier to win the 200-yard butterfly since Gary Hall in 1973, setting another program best 1:38.71. Fifth-year senior Van Mathias garnered attention for his final-season transformation in 2023. Prior to 2023, Mathias had never finished higher than 26th individually at the national meet. Mathias posted dramatic drops in the 50 free (20.05 to 18.89), 100 free (43.70 to 41.33) and 100 breast (54.74 to 50.57) over the year and ended his season as IU’s No. 2 swimmin

A five-year competitor for the Indiana swimming and diving program, Noelle Peplowski joined the coaching staff ahead of the 2023-24 season as an assistant coach. It is an honor to have Noelle join our coaching staff,” Looze said. “She has been one of our all-time best athletes over the last five years, and she has the make-up, intelligence and foundation to become an outstanding coach. “I believe her experiences in swimming will translate immediately into her coaching career.
