Mercer continues to build the program through high-level high school talent and deliberate evaluation of the transfer portal. The player development within the program has also shown in his first seven seasons with a Big Ten-best 30 unique student-athletes drafted over that span. He has continued a tradition of excellence in his first seven years on the job. He has led the Hoosiers to 100 Big Ten victories, 30 unique MLB Draft Picks, all five contested Big Ten Tournaments, three NCAA Regional appearances and a Big Ten regular season championships (2019). Mercer’s start to his IU coaching career saw him join coaching legend Everett Dean as the only IU coaches to win a Big Ten title in their first year as a head coach, a trip to the NCAA Louisville Regional, a season cut short due to a global pandemic and the first-ever conference-only slate in Big Ten history. Chris Virtue has been a key part of Indiana Strength and Conditioning since 2007 and currently serves as the Director of Athletic Performance. He oversees the strength and conditioning programming for Indiana Baseball and plays a role in supporting all of Indiana’s varsity athletic programs. Over his career, Virtue has taken on leadership roles across multiple sports. He has served two stints as interim head athletic performance coach for Indiana Men’s Basketball, spent six seasons as an assistant with basketball (2010-2016), and worked three years with Indiana Football (2007-2010). His experience as head strength coach spans eleven different athletic programs, highlighting his adaptability and expertise in collegiate athletic performance. In 2022, Virtue was recognized as a Master Strength and Conditioning Coach by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa), the highest honor in the field. He maintains his Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC) accreditation and serves on the SCCC test committee, contributing to the profession's development. A two-time graduate of Indiana University, Virtue earned both his bachelor’s (2006) and master’s (2009) degrees in Kinesiology. He and his wife, Crista, live in Bloomington with their three children, Penelope, Charlie, and Josephine.

Assistant Coach/Pitching & Catching
Denton Sagerman completed his seventh season on head coach Jeff Mercer’s staff during the 2025 season. He came to Bloomington with Mercer from Wright State and is the lone remaining member of Mercer’s initial staff at Indiana. The longtime Director of Operations, Sagerman was promoted to Assistant Coach – Pitching & Catching on July 1, 2025. As an assistant coach, Sagerman is responsible for building individualized player development plans for both the hitters and pitchers with the use of analytics and high speed video. He works closely with pitching coach Matt Myers on Pitch Design and mechanical breakdowns to asset with the development of the pitchers. While also leveraging his background in strength and conditioning, Sagerman also works to access movement quality and potential drills/interventions from the use of biomechanics software and force plate/mound data to optimize player performance. From a pitch design perspective, he works to incorporate his knowledge of seam-shifted wake, seam-orientation and use of analytics to help optimize pitchers arsenal’s. From the catching side, Sagerman works to build catching development plans to assist head coach Jeff Mercer in working with the catchers. The former collegiate pitcher also works closely with pitching coach Matt Myers assisting him with pitch design, video analysis, TrackMan and Rapsodo. Director of Operations
Morgan Colopy – a four-year letterwinner for the Hoosiers, joined the staff as a Program Assistant following his graduation in July of 2024. The Centerville, Ohio native assists with day-to-day operations, ordering meals, travel items and summer/winter baseball camps. He was promoted to Director of Operations in the summer of 2025. Colopy played in 139 games with 86 starts during his time as an outfielder at IU. He recorded 81 hits, 21 doubles and 14 home runs for the Hoosiers. He is best remembered for a walk-off home run in a Saturday game against Iowa in 2023. He also homered in the NCAA Knoxville Regional in 2024. He is one of two former players for head coach Jeff Mercer on this year’s staff. Assistant coach Zach Weatherford played for Mercer during their days at Wright State. Prior to Indiana, Colopy spent a semester at Cincinnati. He was a 34th round pick of the San Francisco Giants in the 2019 MLB Draft. He graduated with a degree in Liberal Studies in the spring of 2024.

Rusty Stillions
Rusty Stillions has been with Indiana University Athletics since 2000. He oversees the 23 sports that are based out of Assembly Hall. He previously served as an assistant manager of the equipment room for the Hoosiers and came to IU after 20 years in the sporting goods retail business. Stillions is in charge of all aspects of equipment and oversees the ordering, inventory and issuing of equipment in addition to any maintenance issues that may arise. He has two sons, Aaron (wife Jennifer) and Colby. They reside in Bloomington.

Assistant Coach/Hitting & Recruiting Coordinator
Zach Weatherford completed his third year as a full-time assistant coach and his fourth year on staff during the 2025 campaign. He added additional duties as the team’s recruiting coordinator following a promotion in August of 2024. He is also charge of working with the program’s outfielders and base runners. Weatherford, a Gold Glove outfielder at Wright State, also assists head coach Jeff Mercer with the hitters and offensive strategy. During games, he coaches the first base box and works on the scouting report for opposing teams. Indiana Era (2022-present) Despite playing a number of true freshmen in the lineup, IU’s offense continued to chug along during the 2025 season. The Hoosiers led the Big Ten in batting average (.298), on-base percentage (.418) and scoring (8.2 runs per game). IU was also among the top three in the league in home runs (90), runs (459) and slugging percentage (.512). Behind a pair of disciplined hitters at the top of its lineup, IU was 21st nationally in on-base percentage (.418). Freshman third baseman Will Moore was the conference leader and second among freshmen in the county in getting on base (.514). Veteran outfielder Devin Taylor was also top-50 nationally (.494). One of IU’s biggest success stories of the season was the development of redshirt sophomore Korbyn Dickerson.
