Pete Golding was named the 40th head coach in Ole Miss football history on Nov. 30, 2025. Golding takes over one of the Southeastern Conferences’ top teams of the 2020s after a brilliant career as a defensive guru in the SEC over the last decade. Golding has orchestrated several dominant Ole Miss defenses since arriving in Oxford in 2023, including a school-record pass rush in 2024, and with the Rebels he has mentored eight NFL Draft picks. Golding – who owns nearly two decades of defensive coaching experience – cut his teeth in the SEC as a key member of Nick Saban’s powerful Alabama squads as Saban’s defensive coordinator from 2018-22, which included three SEC titles in 2018, ‘20 and ‘21, as well as a national title with the Crimson Tide in 2020. “Ole Miss Football is special. Austin Thomas returned to Oxford in December 2025 for his second stint with the Rebels and currently serves as president of football operations/general manager. Thomas served as senior associate athletic director for football administration for the last two seasons (2024-25) at LSU. It was Thomas's third stint at LSU as he previously served as general manager for the Tigers in 2021 and was a staff member from 2013-17. Prior to LSU, Thomas spent two years on the Ole Miss staff, serving as football chief of staff and sport administrator for the Rebel football program in 2022 and 2023. In his role, Thomas had oversight of football's administrative and operational functions. His main focus areas included budget, scheduling, facilities and non-coaching personnel, while also serving as the program's main liaison to campus constituents and shaping the program's strategic vision along with head coach Lane Kiffin. A native of Franklin, Tennessee, Thomas came to Oxford from LSU where he served in the same capacity for the Tigers. Thomas spent the 2020 season as senior associate athletic director for football at Baylor, where he was tasked with overseeing all football related activities for the Bears. Jake Schoonover enters 2025 in his third season at Ole Miss, serving as the assistant head coach, special teams coordinator and nickelbacks coach. Schoonover's special teams unit was highlighted by an all-around excellent kicking game in 2024, with All-American senior kicker Caden Davis and fellow senior and punter Fraser Masin leading the way. Davis, a first team All-American by the College Football Network, broke Ole Miss single-season records in both total points scored and points kicking with 129 on the season after going 24-of-29 on field goals and 57-of-59 on PATs -- including an Ole Miss single-game record 10-of-10 line against Furman. Davis also nailed a crucial 57-yard field at LSU, which set a new Tiger Stadium record, which tied him with Cloyce Hinton for the most career makes from at least 55 yards out at two apiece. Davis left Ole Miss as its career record holder in 50-yard field goals (4), and in 2024 led the nation with 82 touchbacks. Masin had his best season as a Rebel to date, helping Ole Miss rank third in the nation with a net punting average of 44.31, which stands as the best net punting mark in school history and tied for the 24th-best in FBS history. Masin, a semifinalist for the Ray Guy, put together the third-best single-season average at 46.6 yards per punt with a long of 65, a total of 16 downed inside the 20 and 14 that traveled at least 50 yards. John David Baker returned to Oxford in December 2025 for his second stint with the Rebels and currently serves as offensive coordinator. Baker served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the last two seasons (2024-25) at East Carolina. In his second full year coordinating the ECU offense, Baker orchestrated a Pirate offense that ranked No. 15 in total offense (460.4 yards per game), and No. 31 in scoring offense (32.7 points per game). He helped Katin Houser blossom into one of the American’s elite quarterbacks under Baker’s direction, completing 66 percent of his passes for 3,300 yards, 19 touchdowns, and just six interceptions, while adding nine rushing touchdowns in 2025. The 2024 Broyles Award Nominee oversaw an offensive in his first year at East Carolina that stood among the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) leaders (Top 30) in five categories including 3rd down conversion percentage (24th/0.451), total offense per game (24th/436.4 ypg), passing yards per completion (26th/13.30) and passing offense (27th/264.0 pg). John Garrison joined the Ole Miss football program as offensive line coach and running game coordinator prior to the 2022 Texas Bowl. Garrison's offensive line unit blocked for a Rebel squad in 2024 that shattered program records in total offense (6,845), yards per play (7.3), passing yards (4,561) and passing yards per game (350.8). Anchoring the line were tackle Diego Pounds, who started each of the last nine games at left tackle, senior Reece McIntyre, who started all 13 games at center after years as a reserve lineman, and fellow senior Jeremy James, who broke the all-time Ole Miss record in career starts (52) before missing most of the campaign due to injury. Randall Joyner has spent five seasons as defensive line coach with the Rebels and added the title of associate head coach following the 2025 campaign. Joyner's defensive line unit ranked among the most feared in the nation in 2024, helping anchor one of the best all-around defenses in Ole Miss history. The Rebels led the nation in both sacks (52) and tackles for loss (120), both of which were new program records, and most of that came from the dominant rotating cast of Jared Ivey, Walter Nolen, JJ Pegues, Suntarine Perkins and Princely Umanmielen. Those five Rebels combined for an absurd 65.5 TFL and 38.0 sacks, led by 10.5 sacks each by Perkins and Umanmielen -- tied for the second-most in Ole Miss single-season history. The Ole Miss defense stifled opponents to just 80.5 rushing yards per game, which ended the season ranked second in the FBS and was the fewest allowed by a Rebel defense since 1966. Ole Miss held nine of its 13 opponents to fewer than 100 yards rushing, six below 50 yards -- including a Gator Bowl record 44 yards allowed to Duke to close the season. Only two Rebel opponents broke 400 yards of total offense, while the Rebels held five to fewer than 300. Nolen became only the 14th consensus All-American in Ole Miss history, while Umanmielen was a second-teamer in his own right. Wes Neighbors III is in his third year as safeties coach at Ole Miss entering 2025. Neighbors' safeties helped contribute to one of the best all-around defenses in Ole Miss history in 2024 that led the nation in sacks (52) and tackles for loss (120) while ranking second at 80.5 rushing yards allowed per game -- the fewest by a Rebel defense since 1966. That Rebel defense was protected on high by senior safeties John Saunders Jr. and Trey Washington, who combined for 111 tackles, 4.5 TFL, four interceptions, 13 pass breakups and five forced fumbles. In his first season in Oxford in 2023, Neighbors coached a talented safeties group that helped propel Ole Miss to its first 11-win season in program history. The Landshark D led the SEC and ranked fifth in the FBS in turnover margin at +11, helped greatly by 13 interceptions -- second-most in the SEC and the most by a Rebel defense since 2015.
