Richard Gomes

Biography

Gomes joined the Providence College volleyball staff as an assistant coach in 2019 and will embark on his seventh season with the Friars in 2025. He was elevated to associate head coach on July 21, 2023. Gomes has been instrumental in improving the Providence College volleyball team's success over the past six years including a 7-3 conference record during the 2020 season. That year, the Friars qualified for the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 1999 and the staff was recognized as BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year. In February of 2022 Gomes was awarded the institution's Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Vision Award. The selection committee for this award considers nominees whose scholarship, community engagement, leadership, or service to others has advanced one or more of the principles which Rev. King embodied: social justice, advocacy, equality, human rights, the promotion of faith and freedom of all people. Gomes was also one of fourteen recipients to receive the American Volleyball Coaches' Association (AVCA) Diversity Award in 2019. The AVCA Diversity Development Team developed the award to continue the AVCA's vision for creating opportunities and advancing the volleyball coaching profession. Prior to joining the PC staff, Gomes spent one season as the head coach of the women's volleyball program at Bridgewater State University in Bridgewater, Mass.
