Margot Royer-Johnson

Margot Royer-Johnson, was named the fifth head volleyball coach in Providence College history in August of 2000 and is embarking on her 26th season with the Friars in 2025. Providence enters its 11th season back in the BIG EAST after competing in the league from 1977-2001. The Friars played in the America East Conference for four seasons (2010-13). Royer-Johnson and her staff earned BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year honors in the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 season, and helped her team qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 1999. That year, the Friars posted a 7-3 overall record, including a 5-3 mark in BIG EAST Conference action. During her career, she has coached seven All-BIG EAST selections. She and her program also have prided themselves on the work they have done in the community. Her program has been selected as the Providence College Athletic Department's Driscoll Cup winner four times and consistently ranks among the top volleyball programs for community service year after year, according to Helper Helper, for NCAA Division I. Royer-Johnson came to Providence after spending three years as assistant coach and kinesiology lecturer at Angelo State University. In addition to her coaching duties at Angelo State, Royer-Johnson was the director of ASU’s volleyball camp and coached the Planet Volleyball Junior Olympic club team for 18-and-under players. Gomes joined the Providence College volleyball staff as an assistant coach in 2019 and will embark on his seventh season with the Friars in 2025. He was elevated to associate head coach on July 21, 2023. Gomes has been instrumental in improving the Providence College volleyball team's success over the past six years including a 7-3 conference record during the 2020 season. That year, the Friars qualified for the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 1999 and the staff was recognized as BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year. In February of 2022 Gomes was awarded the institution's Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Vision Award. The selection committee for this award considers nominees whose scholarship, community engagement, leadership, or service to others has advanced one or more of the principles which Rev. King embodied: social justice, advocacy, equality, human rights, the promotion of faith and freedom of all people. Gomes was also one of fourteen recipients to receive the American Volleyball Coaches' Association (AVCA) Diversity Award in 2019. The AVCA Diversity Development Team developed the award to continue the AVCA's vision for creating opportunities and advancing the volleyball coaching profession. Prior to joining the PC staff, Gomes spent one season as the head coach of the women's volleyball program at Bridgewater State University in Bridgewater, Mass.
