Athletic Trainer
Brett Penning is in his fifth year as a full-time athletic trainer at Michigan State. Previously, Penning spent two years at Washington State as an assistant athletic trainer, working with the football program. From 2012-14, he was the head football athletic trainer at Eastern Illinois and also worked with the men's basketball, men's soccer and men's and women's tennis teams for two years. The Kiester, Minnesota, native, earned a bachelor of science degree in athletic training from Minnesota State University, Mankato in 2008 and a master of science degree in kinesiology education from Michigan State University in 2010. Penning worked with the Spartan wrestling and football teams as a graduate assistant. He is married to the former Erin Bierstedt and they have two children.

Assistant Director/SASS Facility Manager
Jeremy enters his 17th year at Student-Athlete Support Services. He has served in various capacities during his time at Michigan State. As Associate Director of SASS, he is responsible for managing the academic support services for the Spartan Men's Soccer, Wrestling, Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving, Rowing, and Field Hockey programs. During his tenure, Flynn has mentored multiple Academic All-Conference, All-American, and valedictorian student-athletes, and his teams have seen double digit cumulative grade point average increases. As the Facility Manager of the Clara Bell Smith Student-Athlete Academic Center, Flynn oversees the scheduling, maintenance, and special projects of the 31,000 square foot building. He is also an active member of various organizations including the National Association of Academic and Student-Athlete Development Professionals (N4A). He currently serves on the N4A Board of Directors as a Division Director of Membership Services, received N4A Individual Certification in 2011, and graduated from the N4A Professional Development Institute in 2006. Flynn earned a bachelor's degree in Sports Management from Taylor University in 2000 where he was a four-year varsity letter winner on the football team and four-year member of the chamber orchestra. A native of East Lansing, Flynn received his master's degree in Athletics Administration from Michigan State University in 2002. Zachary Stichnoth was hired full time as an assistant director of athletic performance in November 2023 after previously serving as a professional intern with Michigan State athletic performance. He works primarily with rowing and wrestling. Stichnoth began his career at Michigan State in 2021 as a graduate assistant. He assisted with 18 Olympic sports and was in charge of women's cheer and dance. Prior to MSU, Stichnoth volunteered as an assistant sports performance coach in 2020 with five Olympic sports at Loyola University (Chicago), while also serving as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School from 2018-2021. A Silver Spring, Maryland native, Stichnoth earned his master's degree in Kinesiology from Michigan State and a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science from DePaul University. He is certified through the Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coaches Association (SCCC), National Strength and Conditioning Association (CSCS), and USA Weightlifting (Level 1).
