Head Men's Basketball Coach
Justin DeGrood '07 is entering his third season as the head coach of the Gustavus men's basketball program in 2024-25 after leading the team to one if its best finishes of the last decade. DeGrood was named the 24th head coach in program history on March 10, 2022, taking over for Mark Hanson '83 after a 32-year career leading the program. The 2024-25 Gusties charted new territory, highlighted by winning the MIAC Regular Season Trophy. Under DeGrood's leadership, the team started the MIAC season 15-0, including a 66-62 win against #6 Saint John's at home. The team finished the season with a 21-5 record, 15-1 in the MIAC, which is the best MIAC record in school history and the best overall record since 2001-02. At the end of the season, Justin DeGrood was named the MIAC Men's Basketball Coach of the Year for the first time in his career as head coach. DeGrood previously served as the lead assistant under Mark Hanson for nine seasons. In his first year at the helm, DeGrood led the Gusties to an overall record of 9-16 and a MIAC record of 9-11. Prior to returning to Gustavus in 2013, DeGrood served as an assistant coach at Bethel University for three seasons. While at Bethel, he assisted in defensive game and practice planning while specializing in guard play. Justin resides in Saint Peter with his wife and head gymnastics coach Aryn '09, and together have two daughters, Zoey and Harper, as well as a dog, Riggs.

Head Assistant Men's Basketball Coach/Recruiting Coordinator
Chris VanderHyde is entering his third season as the lead assistant for the Gustavus men's basketball team. VanderHyde was an assistant coach under Mark Hanson for five seasons prior to being named the lead assistant for Justin DeGrood in 2022. Last year, the Gustie men's basketball team had an historical season, winning the 2024 MIAC Playoff Championship after an epic postseason run. VanderHyde helped head coach Justin DeGrood to his first postseason victory with an 85-80 win over Bethel in the MIAC quarterfinal, defeating the Royals for the first time all year after dropping both regular season match-ups. On the road against Carleton in the semifinals, the Gusties and Knights played in the highest-scoring MIAC playoff game in conference history, winning 124-116 in double overtime. In the title game, despite being outscored 43-34 in the second half, and 10-6 in the final minutes of play, Hamline's buzzer-beater came up short, giving the Gusties a one-point victory in the title game, 72-71. Prior to arriving at Gustavus, VanderHyde was the head girl's basketball coach at Park Center where he compiled a record of 100-25 and led the team to two AAA state championships and two AAAA state tournament appearances. He also served as an assistant at MIAC competitor Bethel for five years. Rob Stevermer is in his second season as an assistant coach with the Gustavus men's basketball team in the 2024-25 season. The team finished the season 18-11 overall and 14-6 in the MIAC, the best record in a dozen years, before falling to Loras in the first round of the national tournament. Prior to coming to Gustavus, Stevermer served as the girl's basketball coach of Mankato East High School. His teaching and coaching career started at United South Central High School in Wells, Minnesota, where he served 12 years as the head boys basketball coach before accepting a teaching position at Mankato East High School. He served one year as the assistant boy's basketball coach before being hired as the head coach of the Cougars' girl's program in 2017, compiling a record of 85-72, including a Big 9 Championship and 4th place finish in the AAA State Tournament in the 2021-22 season. Stevermer is currently in his eighth year of teaching Social Studies at Mankato East High School. Rob and his wife Brenda reside in Mankato and have three children.

Before arriving at Gustavus, Adamczak spent time at the College of St. Scholastica, UW-River Falls, and at the high school level with Duluth East for four years. While a coach at his alma mater, Adamczak helped the Saints to an overall record of 7-18 and a MIAC mark of 6-14. Adamczak has also spent time coordinating basketball camps with ND42 Basketball Camps throughout the Midwest and was the head trainer at Legacy Hoops Academy in Woodbury during 2022. Prior to beginning his coaching career, Adamczak was a four-year member of the St. Scholastica men's basketball team. The Moose Lake, Minn. native played in 40 games as a guard for the Saints. As a player, Adamczak received the team's Hustle Award and Saints Award in his junior and senior seasons, respectively.
