Head Baseball Coach
Andrew Woitas, a 2010 Gustavus graduate, is in his eighth season on the Gustavus baseball coaching staff in the 2024-25 academic year. Woitas joined the staff as a full-time assistant in 2018 and was named the associate head baseball coach in the fall of 2023. Last season, Woitas and head coach Brad Baker '80 guided the Gusties to a 23-16 overall record and 12-8 mark in the MIAC. In Woitas' second year as a full-time assistant, he helped lead the team to its first MIAC title since 1980. The Gusties also claimed the MIAC regular season championship in the 2023 season. Woitas returned to his alma mater after spending the previous seven years as an assistant baseball coach at Minnetonka High School. During that time, Woitas also coached a youth baseball traveling team, the Minnesota Blizzard. He continues to work with the Blizzard, as well as the Saint Peter-based 507 Baseball Academy, Southern Minnesota's premier baseball training academy. In addition to coaching on the diamond, Woitas assists the Gustavus recruiting efforts while handling logistical elements such as budgeting and travel arrangements. The Sleepy Eye, Minn. native earned MIAC All-Conference honors his senior season after starting all 38 games as an outfielder or pitcher. He batted .406 and led the team with 52 hits, seven doubles, three triples, and 65 total bases. Woitas' 128 career hits rank 24th in program history and his 141 career games played is 13th. Ben Moore is in his fifth season with the Gustavus baseball coaching staff in the 2024-25 academic year. Moore joined the Gusties as an assistant coach and recruiter prior to the 2021 season. He previously served as a pitching coach and recruiter at Macalester College for two years. While at Macalester, Moore helped the Scots to six All-Conference selections. Last season, Moore helped the Gusties to a 23-16 overall record and 12-8 mark in the MIAC. Moore helped the Gusties to a MIAC regular season championship in the 2023 season, the team's second in a five year span. A native of St. Croix Falls, Wis., Moore brings 18 years of playing and coaching experience at the professional level to Gustavus. He's had stints as a pitching coach in the American Association both in Laredo, Texas (2016) and Sioux Falls, S.D. (2017-19). Moore also spent a season in the Frontier League in Washington, Pa. (2015). After graduating from Viterbo University in 2003, Moore signed with the New York Yankees as a pitcher and made it as high as Double-A within the organization. He joined the independent ranks in 2005 with the Calgary Vipers. Moore pitched for the Sioux Falls Canaries from 2008-11 and again from 2013-14. He is the Canaries' all-time leader in wins (55) and strikeouts (698), and his number 25 was retired in 2018. Moore's professional career took him to a number of teams and four different continents. Assistant Baseball Coach - Pitching
Matt Lewis is in his 14th season as a member of the coaching staff for the Gustavus baseball team in the 2024-25 academic year. Lewis, who joined the staff in 2012 season, serves as the team's pitching coach. Last season, Lewis helped the Gusties to a 23-16 overall record and 12-8 mark in the MIAC. Lewis helped lead the team to its first MIAC title since 1980 in the 2019 season. The Gusties also claimed the MIAC regular season championship in the 2023 season. Lewis joined the staff after a stellar pitching career at the NCAA Division III ranks. A 2007 high school graduate of Cathedral Prep in his native Erie, Pennsylvania, Lewis headed to Duluth, Minnesota where he continued his education at the College of St. Scholastica. While at St. Scholastica, Lewis put together one of the best pitching careers in the history of Saints baseball. Over his four-year career, Matt went a combined 25-5 in 41 appearances on the mound. After throwing 197.2 innings in a Saints uniform, Lewis finished his career with an ERA of 2.32. Carrying a career strikeout-to-walk ratio of 165-to-70, opponents hit .249 against Lewis through his tenure. Following his senior season in which he went 9-1 with a 1.73 ERA, Matt was named the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Pitcher-of-the-Year.
