Began his time as an assistant coach at Calvin for track and cross country in 2005. Started his coaching career at Grand Rapids Christian High School in the 1990s before joining the Calvin coaching staff. A 1989 graduate of Calvin, where he ran the 800 meters during his running career. Otte has coached numerous athletes to mid-distance MIAA titles and All-America honors, including (but not limited to) Camille Medema, Todd Schuster, Lauren Bergstrom, Greg Whittle, Ethan Valentine and Delaney Sall. Otte has been a critical part of the Calvin run of consecutive men's cross country MIAA Championships under coaches Brian Diemer and Nicole Kramer, including helping the men to a national championship in 2006. Also helped the Calvin women's cross country team finish top four nationally every year from 2006-10.

Sam Katon was hired as an Assistant Track & Field Coach at Calvin University prior to the 2025-26 season to work primarily with the throwers. As a collegiate athlete at Davenport University from 2014-18, Katon was a standout thrower who earned All-WHAC recognition in men's weight and hammer throws and qualified for the 2017 NAIA indoor and outdoor national championships. He graduated from Davenport with a Bachelor's degree in Sports Management in 2018 and earned his MBA from Davenport in 2020. Katon is a native of Chelsea, Michigan, and resides in Byron Center with his wife Jenna and daughter Nora.
