Head Coach
on Social Media Instagram: @alwermer Al Wermer is the winningest men’s coach in any sport at the University of Toledo, with 360 victories in his 30 years at the helm of the men’s tennis program. Coach Al, as he is referred to by his athletes, has coached 39 Rockets to All-MAC honors, and led his team to its first MAC Tournament title in 50 years along with the program’s first MAC Championship regular season title in 2023. UT has made 12 Mid-American Conference Tournament finals or semi-finals appearances under Wermer’s lead. The Rockets recorded their second-consecutive MAC Championship in 2023-24, taking down No. 1 seeded Western Michigan, 4-1, to claim the victory and appear in the second-straight NCAA Tournament. Pawit Sornlaksup was named MAC Player of the Year while Wermer earned MAC Coach of the Year honors. Sornlaksup made Toledo history as the first Rocket to compete in the NCAA Individual Championships, participating in singles play. Wermer’s team had a historic 2022-23 season, earning the titles of MAC Co-Regular Season Champions and MAC Tournament Champions with the program’s second-best record of 18-6 (8-2 MAC). The Rockets defeated Big Ten opponent Purdue, No. 74 ranked Ball State, won nine consecutive matches en route to earning its first team berth into the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship to place No.7 Michigan (L, 0-4), and was ranked No. 73 in the ITA DI Men’s Tennis Team Rankings. Associate Athletic Director of Olympic Sports Operations
Carrie Schonter-Cherry has served as the director of operations-Olympic sports and business administrator at The University of Toledo since 2015. Prior to her appointment in the Athletic Department, Schonter-Cherry served in a variety of finance positions at UToledo from 2005-11. She left Toledo to become a purchasing card coordinator at the University of Michigan from 2011-12, and then moved on Owens Community College to serve as the Upward Bound specialist from 2012-15 before returning to the Glass City to work for the Rockets. A native of Erie, Mich., Schonter-Cherry graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 1998 with a bachelor of science in telecommunications and film. She earned her masters in education from The University of Toledo in 2008. Schonter-Cherry and her husband Roy are proud owners of two Corgis named Sonny and Reacher.

Assistant Director for Student-Athlete Support Services
Duane Welch was hired as the Assistant Director for Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) at the University of Toledo in July of 2024. Welch currently serves as the advisor for the offense of the football program, and oversees the women's softball and men's tennis programs. He coordinates the learning assistance program for all UT student-athletes, and also manages the SASS office's Rocket Tutorial program, providing content tutors and academic coaching for extra resources for student-athletes. Prior to joining the Rockets' SASS office, Welch worked for Lucas County Juvenile Court as a probation officer, and as a success coach (2021-22) and an advisor for TRIO Student Support Services at the University of Toledo where he specialized in assisting students to graduation while providing opportunities to develop leadership skills. Welch is a two-time graduate of the University of Toledo and has been a finalist for the Outstanding Advisor Award. When not working, Welch spends most of his time with his family, traveling the world, and watching Cleveland Browns, Cavs, and Guardian games. Welch is a native of Barberton, Ohio. He and his wife, Sarah, have a son, Kristopher (KJ), and a daughter, Kenni.

Holden Tincher is in his second year as an assistant strength & conditioning coach for the Olympic sports teams at the University of Toledo, after joining the staff full time in August of 2022. A native of Temperance, Mich., Tincher received his bachelor of science degree in exercise science, with a concentration in health, performance, and fitness promotion from the University of Toledo in 2019, and earned his master's degree in recreation administration-recreational and leisure studies from Toledo in 2021. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) in the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Tincher and his wife, Shelby, reside in Toledo.
