Bill Halverson returns for his sixth year as volunteer coach assisting Director Bob Olesen with the men’s and women’s pole vault. Coach Halverson, a fixture for years in Charlotte area prep vaulting, is an accomplished vaulter, starting at a young age in his hometown of Great Falls, Montana, and is still currently vaulting in masters track and field events. He held the Montana state high school pole vault record (15’9”) for over 20 years. Halverson’s college career started at the University of Montana where he played football and was a pole vaulter before transferring to Mount SAC Community College (California) to concentrate on the pole vault. At Montana he was Big Sky Pole Vault Champion for 1977 where he set the University of Montana vault record of 16’9”, a record that stood for 25 years. His vaulting accomplishments continued with his records lasting for two and three decades. He held the Mount SAC record of 17’1” for 23 years. He was the Field Athlete of the Year for the South Coast Conference in 1978, an NCAA All-American for Track & Field in 1979 and WAC Pole Vault Champion in 1979 and 1981. After Mount SAC, Halverson attended San Diego State University where he still holds the pole vault record of 17’6” set in 1981. Halverson’s vaulting career continued after college. He was the USA Track & Field Master’s National Field Event Athlete of the Year in 1996 and 1997 and in 2005 was honored with induction into the Montana High School Association Athlete’s Hall of Fame. Campbell joins the 49ers from Pratt Community College in Kansas, where he served as the head men's and women's track & field coach for two years. During Coach Campbell's time at Pratt Community College, he helped guide 35 NJCAA national qualifiers, 10 NJCAA Frist Team All-Americans, 12 school record holders, and was named NJCAA Region 6 Men's Indoor Coach of the Year in 2020. Before Pratt Community College (PCC), Campbell served as an assistant coach and the recruiting coordinator at Kennesaw State University for seven seasons, specializing in sprints, hurdles, and relays. Campbell also has experience instructing horizontal jumps, the high jump, and the javelin throw. At Kennesaw State, Campbell assisted in developing 23 conference champions, 14 NCAA Preliminary qualifiers, six school record holders, and three Atlantic Sun Conference Championship record holders. He also coached Jocelyn Powell, a two-time USA Championships qualifier and NCAA All-American. A native from Cartersville, Ga., competed collegiately at Chicago State University, where he is a four-time letter winner, two-time team captain, and a school-record holder in the 4x100m relay.
