Associate Director of Strength & Conditioning (WLax, WSoc, MSoc)
Ben Steenrod joined Temple Athletics in August 2021 as the Associate Director of Sports Performance. In his current role, Steenrod oversees all training aspects of the Women's Lacrosse and Women's Soccer programs. He also spends time assisting with Temple's Football program. In May 2025, he achieved the certification of Master Strength and Conditioning Coach through the CSCCa. Before arriving at Temple, Steenrod spent time at Saint Joseph's University, Villanova University and Virginia Tech. Steenrod started at Saint Joseph's University in 2011 as a part time assistant during the first year of the Hawks Strength department. In 2014 he was promoted to Head Strength Coach where he oversaw all aspects of training primarily for the Hawks Women's Basketball, Baseball, Women's Lacrosse, Men's Soccer, Softball and Nationally Ranked Field Hockey program. During varying points of his time on Hawk Hill, Steenrod also assisted with or was responsible for the training of the Men's Basketball and Men's Lacrosse teams. In his time at SJU, Steenrod helped to develop numerous high level MLB draft picks, future NBA players and helped multiple Hawks sports teams capture Atlantic 10 championships. As well as working as a strength coach, Steenrod served as color commentator for the Hawks Women's Basketball and Baseball teams both on the radio and ESPN+ broadcasts. Assistant Coach
John Velasco has completed his first season as assistant coach at Temple, joining Bryan Green's staff in the spring of 2023. Velasco helped lead the Owls through major roster turnover in year one, with 14 new players joining the squad, including ten freshmen. During his first year as a Division I coach, Velasco saw the Owls come within one game of a conference playoff berth and pull off one of Temple's biggest wins of the year, a 2-1 upset of defending National Champions and No. 10 ranked Syracuse in October. Velasco most recently spent two seasons as the head coach of Kings College (Pa.) before coming to Temple. In his first season leading the program, he garnered a 9-6-1 record while going 6-2 in MAC Freedom play to earn the Monarchs a semifinals appearance in the MAC Freedom conference tournament. After a strong debut season, Velasco was named the MAC Freedom Coach of the Year in 2021. Before joining King’s in the spring of 2021, Velasco gained head coaching experience with both Kean University in 2016 as an interim, and Marywood University where he stayed from 2018 through 2021 before taking the job with the Monarchs. During that 2016 season with Kean, he led the team to a 14-6-1 overall record, earning them a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in six years. Assistant Coach
Rich Kessler starts his first season as an assistant coach at Temple in 2025. Kessler spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at La Salle, where he oversaw home game operations, team travel, and goalkeeper development. Before joining La Salle, Kessler spent two seasons as an assistant at his alma mater, Alvernia University, helping the Wolves to a pair of ECAC Tournament berths. During his time there, Alvernia won 25 matches and advanced to the semifinals of the 2022 ECAC Postseason Tournament. A former goalkeeper for Alvernia from 2005–08, Kessler has also served as the Director of Goalkeeping at FC Delco and held assistant coaching roles at Penn State Berks and Penn State Abington. He was the head coach at Cumberland County College in 2018 and at Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School from 2019–23.
