Head Coach
Mike Hampton, who spent 18 seasons on Ed Blankmeyer’s staff as the program’s hitting coach and recruit coordinator, was named the program’s head coach on Jan. 9, 2020. The Red Storm’s skipper increased the Johnnies’ win totals in each of his first five seasons since taking over the program. After logging 28 wins in the 2023 campaign, Hampton led his team back to the top of the BIG EAST with a 38-18-1 overall record in 2024. Hampton became the first head coach in conference history to guide his program to a BIG EAST Tournament Championship in his first postseason appearance, sealing a 4-2 victory over Georgetown to capture the program’s BIG EAST-leading 10th conference title. With the league’s at-large bid, Hampton guided the Johnnies to its 38th NCAA Tournament appearance and first under his direction. St. John’s also picked up its first win in the national postseason slate since 2018 with a 10-9 victory against Penn after Anthony Brienza walked off in the 12th inning on an RBI single to end the longest Red Storm postseason game in 43 years. St. John’s, who was picked sixth in the conference’s 2024 Preseason Coaches Poll, opened the campaign with a 9-5 victory at No. 2 Florida, earning the highest ranked regular season victory in program history. Assistant Coach
Scavelli joined the Red Storm staff as a volunteer assistant coach in September 2024. The newest Johnnie will oversee outfield responsibilities and assist with hitting development. The Franklin Square, N.Y., native returns to Queens after a standout 2024 senior season, that featured the Red Storm winning its 10th BIG EAST Tournament title. The former outfielder earned All-BIG EAST honors after hitting .316 with 66 hits, 43 runs scored, 13 doubles, four triples, six home runs and 38 RBIs. The Johnnie was also tabbed as an ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Award Finalist, posting a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage and pulling in all 106 opportunities with 10 assists in 2024. Scavelli came to St. John’s after three stellar seasons at Molloy, where he was the 2023 ECC Player of the Year, after earning career-high marks in batting average (.391), on-base percentage (.481), slugging percentage (.624), hits (79), runs (60), RBIs (46), doubles (19), triples (5), home runs (6), and stolen bases (15). Associate Head Coach/Pitching Coach
A former BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year as a St. John's student athlete, George Brown returned to his alma mater as the team's pitching coach prior to the start of the 2018 season. During Brown's first year back in Queens, the Red Storm sported one of the nation's top pitching staffs. The Johnnies turned in an ERA of 3.08 and a WHIP of 1.2, both of which ranked fifth nationally. The Red Storm, which won 40 games for the third time in the span of four years, posted seven shutouts on the year. At the end of the campaign, Brown saw southpaw Kevin Magee drafted in the ninth round by the Baltimore Orioles before Mike LoPresti was snagged by the Pirates in the 18th round. In 2019, Brown saw four of his pitchers selected in the first 18 rounds of the MLB Draft. Gavin Hollowell was taken in the sixth round by the Colorado Rockies, Sean Mooney was selected by the Twins in the 12th round and Joe LaSorsa and Jeff Belge heard their names called in the 18th round by the Rays and Dodgers, respectively. The Red Storm finished first in the BIG EAST and 42nd nationally with a 3.89 ERA. Individually, LaSorsa's 1.66 ERA ranked seventh among qualifying Division I hurlers. Hollowell and LaSorsa earned spots on the All-BIG EAST First Team for their efforts. In 2021, two St. John's pitchers were rewarded with spots on All-BIG EAST teams before signing on to begin their professional careers with MLB organizations.
