Assistant Coach
Alex Muntefering joined the Jackrabbit track & field and cross country staff in August 2022 and serves as an assistant coach working with the middle and long-distance runners. Muntefering, who also served as a graduate assistant coach for SDSU from 2014-2016, returns to Brookings after a successful stint at Texas State University (2016-2019) and two years coaching distance runners outside of the collegiate ranks since 2020. While as an assistant coach at Texas State, Muntefering oversaw the distance program and led the Bobcats to unprecedented heights. In 2017, the women’s cross country team captured their first ever Sun Belt Conference team title, while the men’s team had their highest ever team finish at the NCAA South Central Region Cross Country Championships (5th place). In 2018, Muntefering coached the first woman to win an individual cross country title at Texas State in 24 years and led the women’s cross country team to a program best 3rd place finish at the South Central Region Championship meet. On the track, Muntefering’s middle and long-distance runners scored significant points that helped to win six more Sun Belt Conference team championships between 2017 to 2019, including Devina Schneider, the high point scorer at the 2017 Sun Belt Conference outdoor meet. Associate Head Coach
David St. John joined the SDSU staff as an assistant track and field coach full time in 2009 after serving as interim assistant coach midway through the 2008-09 season, helping primarily with the jumpers. During his stint as interim coach, St. John coached two conference champions and regional qualifiers in the men’s and women’s high jump and triple jump, with one triple jumper making it to the 2009 USA Outdoor Championships. The Jacks also had female athletes jump their way into the all-time top-10 list, four in the long jump, three in the triple jump and two in the high jump. On the men’s side, three athletes found their way to the top 10 in the high jump, one in the long jump and one in the triple jump. Before joining the SDSU track and field coaching staff, St. John was an assistant track and field coach at Black Hills State University from 2003-2005 where he was the sprints, jumps and throws coach. Under his tutelage, the track and field team watched school records fall in the 55 meter dash, 60-meter hurdles, 100, 200, 400, triple jump, discus, weight throw and pentathlon. Prior to joining the Yellow Jackets, St. John was the head track and field coach for two years at Augustana College (S.D.) from 2001-2003 where school records fell in the sprint and jumping events. He made his move to the state of South Dakota from Middle Tennessee State University where he received his masters degree in Sports Management in 2001 and was the high jump coach from 2000-2001. Associate Head Coach
Eric Hanenberger has been the associate head track & field coach since joining the Jackrabbit coaching staff in July 2015. Eric specializes in the sprints, hurdles, relays and co-coaches the multi-event Jackrabbits. He has made an immediate impact since arriving; All-Summit League (61 individuals, 29 relay teams), Summit League Champions (Team – Men 2019 and 2022 ID, 18 individuals, 2 relay teams), NCAA Qualifiers (8 individuals, 1 relay team) and NCAA All-American Honorable Mention – 4x100m Relay Team. His athletes have put their names on 19 school records (15 individuals, 4 relay teams) as Jackrabbit All-Time Bests. Prior to joining the Jackrabbits, Eric spent three seasons as the head coach at St. Cloud State University (Minn.). There is athletes earned: All-Northern Sun League (34 individuals, 7 relay teams), Northern Sun League Champions (8 Individuals), NCAA Championship Qualifiers (Participants – 11) and 2 All-Americans (1 First-Team, 1 Second-Team). Three individuals and one relay team stamped their names as school record holders. Hanenberger's move to South Dakota State marks his return to The Summit League. From 2010-12, he served as an assistant coach at North Dakota State. The Bison men’s and women’s teams combined to win seven conference team titles between the indoor and outdoor seasons during his tenure in Fargo. Assistant Coach
Tyler Lippert is in his eighth season as the throws coach at South Dakota State University. During his time in Brookings, Lippert has made a major impact on the Jackrabbit Track and Field program. During the past 8 seasons at SDSU his athletes have broken 9 school records in the throwing events along with the men’s decathlon and women’s heptathlon records, as well as achieving 60 top ten list marks in the throwing events. Most notably, Lippert has developed and sent 15 competitors to the NCAA West Regional during his time at SDSU. The 2024 season was highlighted by two school records in the throwing events. Nora Peterson broke the school record in the women’s javelin throw with a 156’4” performance at the Drake Relays in a winning effort. Peterson also was Summit League Runner-Up and an NCAA West Regional Qualifier in the javelin. Ethan Fischer broke the school record in the men’s discus with a throw of 186’6”. Fischer was also Summit League Runner-Up and an NCAA West Regional Qualifier in the discus. At The Summit League Indoor and Outdoor Championship meets, Hunter Wallster was Runner-Up in the men’s weight throw and Conference Champion the in the Hammer Throw. Wallster was also named men’s scholar of the championship at the Summit League Indoor Championship meet. Mildred Young was Summit League Runner-Up in the women’s discus throw.
