Head Coach
Aaron Johnston has built the South Dakota State University women’s basketball program into a standard bearer within The Summit League and across women’s college basketball. The dean of Summit League women’s basketball coaches, Johnston has infused a culture of excellence, embraced the balance of student and athlete and has the name South Dakota State equating to success. COACHING EXCELLENCE Entering his 26th full season (2025-26) at the helm of the Jackrabbits’ program, Johnston has created a mid-major powerhouse. Johnston has guided SDSU to 18 postseason appearances, including 13 NCAA Tournament berths, since the program made the jump to Division I in 2004-05. The nine-time Summit League Coach of the Year (2008, 2009, 2012, 2014, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025) has guided the Jackrabbits to a winning record in all 25 years at South Dakota State, and has led SDSU to 22 20-plus win seasons, including 18 of the last 19 years. Johnston is South Dakota State’s winningest women’s basketball coach with a 628-195 career record (.763 winning percentage). He tops the Summit League's overall victories (458) and league victories (260) charts. Johnston enters the 2025-26 season with a 41-5 (.891) Summit League postseason tournament record and a 60-21 (.741) mark in all Division I postseason games (Summit League, NCAA, WNIT). Assistant Coach & Director of Player Development
Erika Sage enters her fifth season on staff in 2025-26. This is her second season as an assistant coach and third as the Jackrabbits' director of player development. She oversees the team's video operations and assists with perimeter player development, coordinating team travel, recruiting and summer camps. Sage, a Fremont, South Dakota native, began her career at SDSU as a graduate assistant for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons. In Sage's first four seasons with the Jacks, SDSU went 115-25 (.821) overall - the winningest four-year stretch in program history - with a combined seven Summit League titles. The Jackrabbits have gone unbeaten against Summit League competition in three straight seasons, made three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and won a pair of First Round games (2023, 2025). The Jackrabbits won the WNIT in 2021-22. In 2024-25, South Dakota State won its fifth straight regular season Summit League title and three-peated as the conference’s postseason champion. The Jackrabbits finished the year 30-4, reaching 30 wins for the second time in the Division I era and third time overall. SDSU knocked off three ranked teams - No. 21 Creighton, No. 21 Oregon and No. 17 Oklahoma State. The Jacks’ win over the seventh-seeded OSU Cowgirls came in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, 74-68, to put SDSU in the second round for the second time in three years. Assistant Coach
Macy Stanage (formerly Macy Miller) returned to Brookings for her second stint on AJ's staff and first as an assistant coach ahead of the 2024-25 season. She enters her third overall season on staff at South Dakota State in 2025-26. She is responsible for developing SDSU’s perimeter players, teaching team offense and defense and assisting with recruiting. In 2024-25, South Dakota State won its fifth straight regular season Summit League title and three-peated as the conference’s postseason champion.
