Coe Michaelson was named the head coach of the California Baptist University men’s soccer program in January 2016. Michaelson, who joined the Lancers after a successful tenure as head coach of Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, ID, enters his 11th season at the helm with a record of 98-60-25. The Lancers will enter 2026, year 11 under Michaelson, in a new conference as CBU exited the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) as regular-season champions. CBU clinched its conference title in the final minute of the regular season when William Lawson scored to help the Lancers beat San Diego State, 2-1. The Lancers’ season ultimately ended in overtime against San Jose State in the WAC Semifinals. CBU led the WAC with nine All-Conference selections in 2025, highlighted by Stavros Charalampous, who was named WAC Defender of the Year. The Lancers also made history when they jumped to No. 25 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, CBU’s first DI ranking. The Lancers also earned their best RPI positioning at No. 25, and beat No. 21 UC Irvine, marking the first victory over a DI-ranked opponent in program history. California Baptist University joins the Big West Conference in 2026, Michaelson’s third conference with the Lancers (PacWest, WAC, Big West). Michaelson entered the 2025 season after a 6-8-5 finish in 2024. The Lancers’ season ended in the semifinal of the WAC Championship, following a 3-1 loss to Seattle. Stephen Marshall was named CBU Assistant Men's Soccer Coach in February of 2016 after previously coaching at Northwest Nazarene with Coach Coe Michaelson. Since joining Michaelson at CBU in 2016, the pair has built an overall record of 61-38-10 while holding a 39-23-5 record in conference play between the PacWest and the Western Athletic Conference. During the spring 2021 season, the team was ranked in the United Soccer Coaches Far West Region Poll every week of the season, climbing as high as sixth in a region containing numerous Pac-12, Big West, and WAC competitors. In 2022, the Lancers finished with a 11-7-3 record and placed fifth in the conference. In their first year eligible for the WAC Tournament, CBU hosted the tournament and went on a historic run, beating #4 Utah Valley, #1 Air Force, and #2 San Jose State to claim the Championship. In the championship game vs San Jose State it came down to penalty kicks were Tournament MOP Nolan Premack blocked the first attempt to set up the 3-1 victory. The CBU-hosted tournament set a conference record for attendance with 1,416. The Lancers claimed the auto bid and competed in their first NCAA Tournament were they drew UCLA and lost in a close game 2-1 in Westwood. CBU received five All-WAC selection in 2022 with Thomas Beecham and Bryan Iliohan named to the First Team, David Cordes and Luis Mueller named to the Second Team, and Adolfo Pino landing on the All-Freshman team.
