Ian Bishop enters his first season as assistant swimming coach/recruiting coordinator at BGSU during the 2024-25 season. Bishop comes to Bowling Green from Division III John Carroll University outside of Cleveland, Ohio, where he served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for two seasons under new BGSU head coach Tanner Barton. While at JCU, Bishop helped lead the Blue Streaks to two men’s and two women’s Ohio Athletic Conference championships and was a part of four OAC Men’s and Women’s Coaching Staff of the Year awards combined. In 2023, the men’s team placed in the top 15 at the NCAA Championships for only the third time in program history. Additionally, Bishop was one of only six collegiate coaches in any division to win the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Jean Freeman Award earlier this year, which recognizes those whose exceptional contributions have brought recognition to their institution and have epitomized the characteristics of Freeman, who was a longtime coach for the University of Minnesota. “I’m very excited for Ian Bishop to join Bowling Green State University,” Barton said. “Ian is ready and eager to assist in all facets of the program. Sam Watson joined BGSU's strategic communications department as a coordinator in July 2025. He serves as the primary media contact for swim & dive, track & field and cross country, while also acting as the tertiary media contact for football. A Colorado Springs native, Watson comes to Bowling Green from Baylor University. From 2023-2025, he was a student intern in the Bears' athletics communications department. In this role, he managed social media coverage and input live stats for the tennis, basketball, baseball and softball teams. He also wrote press releases, athlete bios and updated records. Prior to working in athletics communications, Watson interned with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks in the Cape Cod Summer League. In two months, he orchestrated nearly a 17% increase in their Twitter following. In the fall of 2022, he worked for the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. As a public relations intern, he wrote press releases, film scripts and inductee bios. In May 2023, Watson graduated from Baylor with a BA in journalism and communication. He stuck around for two more years, earning his master's in communication on a full academic scholarship in May 2025.
