"Herbie" has led the Bethel Royals women's basketball program to new heights in his tenure, something he has done at each institution he has coached at. Entering his 24th season at Bethel in 2025-26, he has led the women's basketball program to NCAA Tournament appearances in 2015, 2020 and 2025 as well as the program's first MIAC championship in 2020. Holds a record of 332-235 in 23 seasons at Bethel with a .586 winning percentage. He was inducted into Minnesota Girls Basketball Coaches Association (MGBCA) Hall of Fame in 2022. Before Bethel, he set school records for wins at Cornell College and advanced the team to the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference post-season tournament for the first time in school history. He was named Female Sports Coach of the Year by Cedar Rapids Post-Gazette in 2000 and 1996-97 South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference Coach of the Year. A native of Charles City, Iowa, he is a husband and father who resides in Lino Lakes.
