Ashley Herndon

Biography

Over five seasons working with Citowicki at Montana, Herndon helped the Griz to three-consecutive Big Sky regular season championships, going undefeated in conference play in 2023 and 2024 and capped with a third title in 2025. Montana also won the conference tournament in 2021 and 2025, earning berths to the NCAA Tournament. Herndon was hired at Montana in July 2021 after spending the previous spring season as a volunteer coach at her alma mater, James Madison. With Herndon overseeing the team’s offensive attack, Montana scored 27 goals in her first season on staff in 2021, the most goals for the program since 2014. The Grizzlies scored 25 goals in 2022, 33 in 2023, the most for the program since 2000, 29 in 2024, and 31 goals in 2025. Montana was shut out only 12 times in 58 matches over three seasons from 2023-25. In 2023, Herndon coached Montana’s Skyleigh Thompson to Big Sky Offensive MVP honors, while Delaney Lou Schorr was the league’s Golden Boot winner. Jen Estes was the co-Offensive MVP in 2024. Thompson, Schorr and Estes were all United Soccer Coaches All-West Region selections. A native of Ashburn, Va., Herndon was a four-time All-Mid-Atlantic Region selection for James Madison while playing for the Dukes from 2013-16. She was voted the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year in 2013, first-team All-CAA as a sophomore, junior and senior, and the CAA Player of the Year in 2016.
