At a Glance Head Coach David Riley enters his second season at WSU in 2025-26 and fifth season as a Division-I head coach. Riley was named the 20th men’s basketball coach in Washington State history, April 2, 2024, and began his Cougar career with a 19-15 first-season record and postseason berth to the College Basketball Crown. Over four seasons as a Division-I head coach, Riley has amassed an 81-53 record with two conference titles and three postseason appearances. Riley was named the back-to-back Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year prior to his arrival on the Palouse. In his first season at WSU, Riley guided the Cougar program to a fourth-consecutive postseason berth, setting school records with 968 field goals and 574 assists in his free-flowing offensive scheme. Riley’s Cougs scored 2,683 points – the second-most points by a Cougar men’s team in a single season in program history. In the 2025 NBA Draft, WSU’s Cedric Coward was selected as the No. 11 overall pick, going in the first round as the highest Cougar NBA selection since Klay Thompson was drafted 11th in 2011. Riley spent 13 years in Cheney, Washington, beginning as a graduate assistant, eventually being promoted to the role of head coach in 2021 after 10 seasons as an assistant in the program. Zach Margolis joined the Washington State Athletics staff as head basketball performance coach in September 2019. Margolis will work directly with both men’s and women’s basketball programs at WSU in all facets of the teams’ physical development. Margolis arrives at WSU having spent the past year as assistant athletic director of strength and conditioning at St. Mary’s College, directing all facets of performance development for the men’s basketball program. Margolis oversaw the strength and conditioning program for the Gaels' 16 Division I sports. Margolis joined the Saint Mary's staff after spending the previous year at Wichita State as the assistant strength and conditioning coach. Prior to Wichita State, Margolis was the head strength and conditioning coach for Stanislaus State's 14 varsity sports. Prior to Stanislaus State, Margolis was the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Northern Colorado for five years before being promoted to director of sport performance for Olympic sports. Margolis graduated from Northern Arizona University with a bachelor of science in exercise science in May 2008. He then received his master's degree in May 2011 with an emphasis in sport science and nutrition from the University of Texas at Austin. Margolis is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association) in addition to certification through the CSCCA (Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coaches Association).
