Biography

Ryan Wellner enters his sixth season at Notre Dame as an assistant coach for the upcoming 2024-25 season. University of Notre Dame Baumer Family Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Kevin Corrigan announced the hiring of Ryan Wellner as an assistant coach on July 15, 2019. Wellner serves the program as the defensive coordinator and director of recruiting for the Irish. Wellner helped guide the Irish during their most successful stretch in program history, winning back-to-back national championships during the 2023 and 2024 seasons, the first two titles in program history. The Irish also captured the 2024 ACC regular season and tournament titles en route to the national championship. Notre Dame has garnered 17 All-America honors, four of which were first team citations, since Wellner's arrival despite none being handed out during the 2020 season due to COVID. Following the 2023 season, Wellner was named the DI Assistant Coach of the Year by USA Lacrosse. The Irish allowed just 9.69 goals per game, the best mark in the ACC, despite playing the country's best attacks on a weekly basis. Notre Dame's defense was somehow even better during the 2024 season, leading the country in scoring defense, allowing an average of 8.94 goals per game. The Irish turned in an incredible performance in the national title game, holding Maryland to just five goals in a 10-goal win to repeat as champions.
