Assistant Coach
Andrew Hess has been the recruiting coordinator at Columbia University for the past 10 years, leading efforts that have helped bring championship caliber athletes to both the heavyweight and lightweight programs. He spent six seasons as Associate Head Coach of the Lightweight program before moving to help spearhead the development of the Heavyweight program. Since joining Columbia in 2016, he has helped guide crews to two IRA National Championships, an IRA team points trophy, an Eastern Sprints title, and two Jope Cups. In addition to his work at Columbia, Hess has been part of the U.S. National Team system since 2020. He coached with the U19 Men’s National Team for two summers before joining the U23 Men’s National Team staff, where he has coached for the past three summers. In 2025, he guided the U.S. Men’s Pair to a fifth-place finish in the A Final at the U23 World Championships in St. Catharines, setting a U.S. record time of 6:22.17. His athletes have won US trials across multiple boat classes, and he has qualified every U23 men’s boat class, bringing crews to the World Championships in the LM1x, LM2x, M2-, M2x, and M1x. He has also coached the Men’s Single at the Senior World Championships. Hess holds an MBA in Data Science, and a Master’s Degree in Neuroscience & Motor Learning from Columbia University and is currently publishing research on contextual interference in elite endurance athletes.

Assistant Head Coach
Korholz came the Lions' Heavyweight staff as the assistant coach in October 2022, bringing along a plethora of rowing experience and knowledge. Korholz competed in rowing at the 1996, 2000, and 2004 Olympic Games, winning a silver medal in the eight in 2004. Korholz rowed at seven World Championships, in 1994-95, 1997-99, and 2002-03. She won two medals in the eight, a silver in 1994, and a gold in 1995. She also won gold medals in the eight at the 1996 Lucerne International Regatta and 1996 Mannheim International Regatta. Korholz joined the U.S. rowing coaching staff in 2005, assisting in the training, recruiting and organization of the U.S. Women's National Team. She was an integral part of the success of the women's program, including the women's eight's 11 consecutive world and Olympic championships. At the 2015 World Rowing Championships, Korholz coached the women's quadruple sculls to a world title and at the 2012 Olympic Games, Korholtz coached the U.S. women’s quadruple sculls to a bronze medal, a first for the United States. Most recently, Korholz was a women's singles coach for USA at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Assistant Coach
Maggie Gavin joined the Columbia rowing staff in January 2024 as an assistant coach. A 2017 graduate of Columbia, Gavin has remained actively involved with the Alumni Association, contributing to its endeavors in various capacities. During her four years as a Lion, Gavin earned both silver and gold medals at Eastern Sprints in 2014 and 2017, respectively. Gavin has since trained and competed with the Undine Barge Club of Philadelphia and the New York Athletic Club. Gavin holds a B.A in Film and Media Studies from Columbia and she has played integral roles in Emmy-nominated documentary films while also leading marketing initiatives at Comcast and Microsoft. Gavin thanks her father, Paul, and her high school coach, Mike Brown, for introducing her and her three sisters to the sport of rowing.
