Jimmy Smith

Biography

Jimmy Smith joined the Stephen F. Austin men’s basketball staff as Associate Head Coach in April 2025, bringing over a decade of head-coaching experience and more than 200 career collegiate wins. Smith spent the previous five seasons as head coach at Trinity University (Texas), compiling a 98–24 record. During his tenure, he led the Tigers to multiple Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) regular-season championships and NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. He was twice named SCAC Coach of the Year and was also the NABC District Coach of the Year following the 2023–24 season. Prior to Trinity, Smith served as head coach at Millsaps College from 2017 to 2020. He took over a program that had gone 4–22 the previous season and guided the Majors to the Southern Athletic Association championship game in his final year. He also spent two seasons as head coach at Texas Lutheran University, transforming the program from last place to back-to-back SCAC championships and consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Smith twice earned SCAC Coach of the Year honors and also received NABC Division III South Region Co-Coach of the Year recognition at Texas Lutheran. Smith began his collegiate head-coaching career at Schreiner University, leading the Mountaineers to their first winning season since moving to NCAA Division III.
