Biography

Bio entering 2025-26 season After five seasons as an assistant in which he helped lead San Diego State men's tennis into the national spotlight while earning a pair of regional assistant coach of the year awards, Gene Carswell enters his 23rd season as SDSU's head coach in 2025-26. During his tenure, Carswell has led the Aztecs to four Mountain West regular-season championships and one conference tournament title to go with a pair of NCAA tournament berths in 2005 and 2015. Individually, the San Diego native has coached four MW Player of the Year winners and two league Freshman of the Year recipients, while his players have garnered 37 all-Mountain West singles accolades and 19 all-conference doubles honors. In the 2025 campaign, Carswell guided three Aztecs to all-conference honors with Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice receiving All-Mountain West Singles distinction and Alexander Mandma/Mathieu Josserand earning doubles honors. The 2025 Aztecs captured conference victories over UNLV (4-2) and Nevada (4-2). The program also landed four players on the Academic All-Mountain West Team with Josserand, Mandma, Marc Kleber and Denis Maijorov being recognized for their success in the classroom. Josserand, Kleber and Maijorov also earned Mountain West Scholar-Athlete distinction. In 2024, Carswell led the Aztecs to a 16-7 season and a Mountain West Championships runner-up finish. Robin Parts, a transfer out of Wisconsin, amassed a perfect 17-0 dual singles record and 5-0 in the Mountain
