Student-Athlete Development and Success
Brett Miller comes to Rutgers University with a diverse background of experience that includes collegiate coaching, and corporate roles. Most recently, he was employed at Actalent (formerly Aerotek Scientific), a talent solutions firm that supports the science and engineering sector. His focus was to provide staffing support and insight to HealthCare clients such as RWJ Barnabas and the Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Prior to Actalent, Miller spent six years in the collegiate ranks as an assistant baseball coach. Miller started his coaching career at TCNJ as the Lions hitting coach and recruiting coordinator where he helped lead TCNJ to back-to-back 32-win seasons, two NCAA Tournament appearances (2016, 2017), and a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship in 2017. Miller then spent one year at Monmouth serving as an assistant baseball coach, performing a variety of duties including, individualized practice plans and assisting in the development of student-athletes both on and off the field. Most recently, Miller was a member of the Frostburg State coaching staff in 2018-2020. While there, he supported the program's transition from Division III to Division II baseball. Miller, an outfielder on the York College (Pa.) baseball team, earned his bachelor's degree in sport management in 2014 followed by a master's degree in education from Frostburg State University in 2020. Miller currently resides in Roselle, New Jersey.

Assistant Coach
Danny Bethea enters his third year as an assistant coach for Rutgers in 2026 after joining the program August 2023. In his role, Bethea coaches the Scarlet Knight catchers and outfielders, assists with hitting/offensive development, recruiting and coaches first base. Bethea joined RU after five years on the coaching staff at St. John’s – including his last four as the Red Storm’s hitting coach. In his time at RU, Bethea has played a key role in the Scarlet Knights consistently ranking among the nation's best in fielding percentage, with RU being one of six program to have a fielding percentage of .976 in each of the last four seasons. Bethea has also played a key role in the development of a pair of third round MLB Daft selections in Trevor Cihen and 2024 Big Ten Player of the Year Josh Kuroda-Grauer. The 2025 season featured Trevor Cohen's historic offensive performance, which etched his name in both Rutgers and Big Ten record books. Cohen set a Big Ten record with 56 hits in conference play and batted .467, leading the conference by 86 points. His 24 doubles tied an RU program record. Both Cohen and Ty Doucette dominated conference batting averages, ranking first and third respectively, with Doucette hitting .374 in Big Ten games. As a team, Rutgers hitters were the most difficult to strike out in the Big Ten, with three Scarlet Knights ranking among the conference's top seven in lowest strikeout percentage. Darrick Brown serves as Assistant Director/Director of Football Academics with Rutgers Athletics after he joined the appointment in July 2017. In his role, Brown oversees all aspects of academic services for the Scarlet Knight football program, which includes initial eligibility for incoming student-athletes all the way through their graduations. This is Brown's second stint with Rutgers Athletics, as he previously worked within the academic department at the University from 2006-12. Brown arrived in 2017 after a three-year stint at the University of Southern California, where he was the Assistant Athletic Director/Director of Student Support Services within USC Athletics. Among other responsibilities with the Trojans, Brown oversaw the Athlete Career Transition (ACT) program, which provided USC student-athletes with career panels, networking events, job shadows and internship opportunities. Brown has also oversaw academics for football programs at the University of Miami (2013-14) and the University of Central Florida (2012-13) after his initial appointment with the Scarlet Knights. Brown received his bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Maine in 2000, where he was a two-time all-conference selection as a return specialist for the Black Bear's football team. Brown still co-owns the school record for most kick returns in a season with 28.

Griffin Whitmer, a 2020 graduate of Rutgers, returned to the Rutgers athletic department in March 2022 and currently serves as Assistant Director, Communications. In his role, Whitmer is the primary contact for baseball, women's soccer and gymnastics. He also oversees the credentialing process and stat crew for football. Whitmer joined Rutgers after serving multiple roles in the athletic department at the University of Washington in Seattle. He joined UW in February 2021 as a graduate assistant and was the primary contact for the baseball program. He moved to the role of Communications Assistant in the summer of 2021, continuing his work with the baseball team and also acting as the media contact for both men's and women's soccer, softball and gymnastics. He worked with the UW men's soccer team, managing communications, social media and game management efforts for the Huskies, who reached No. 1 in the national rankings, hosted three NCAA Tournament matches and advanced to the National Championship Game in the College Cup. He was the secondary media contact for the UW men's basketball and women's basketball teams and served on the nationally-recognized stat crew for football, working all Washington home games as well as the Rose Bowl Game in Pasadena, Calif. in January 2022. Head Student Manager/Bullpen Catcher
A native of Manalapan, N.J., Jake Schwinger is in his third season with Rutgers Baseball, where he serves as the head student manager and bullpen catcher. In his role, Schwinger oversees the daily operations of the student manager staff while also working closely with the Rutgers pitching staff as a bullpen catcher during practices and all home and away games throughout the season. Schwinger attended Manalapan High School, where he was a two-year varsity baseball player for the Braves. A junior in the School of Arts and Sciences, Schwinger is pursuing his bachelor's degree in sport management.

John Reardon joined the Rutgers Athletics staff as an equipment manager in September 1984. He has assisted the staff of all 24 sports during his tenure at Rutgers. Currently, "JR" provides daily support to the baseball and tennis programs. A 1983 Marietta College graduate, 2026 marks Reardon’s 27th season patrolling the dugout as the equipment manager for Rutgers Baseball. Spanning three Conference affiliations – the Big East, American and Big Ten – the Scarlet Knights have captured over 600 wins on the diamond during JR’s equipment tenure. JR has been mentored by three 1000-win baseball coaches during his his baseball career: Don Schaly of Marietta College (1,442), Rutgers Hall of Famer Fred Hill (1,089) and current Rutgers head coach Steve Owens (1,075). A member of the AEMA and the Schutt Football Helmet advisory committee while a football equipment manager, JR worked the Rutgers football sidelines through the 2000 season. The veteran “Voice of the RAC,” Reardon can be found center court with the microphone for men’s basketball games and wrestling matches, and was the “Man behind the Mic,” for the Rutgers women’s basketball runs to the Final Four (1999-00) and National Championship game (2006-07). JR’s passion for announcing has its roots as the public address announcer of the NCAA Division III Baseball World Series from 1981-87. Strength and Conditioning
Ken Pennini joined the Rutgers Athletics as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach in October 2022. He is responsible for the development and implementation of strength and conditioning programs for baseball and men’s golf. Pennini arrived at Rutgers after seven years at Bryant University where he held positions of Associate Head Strength Coach and Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach. He worked with athletes on multiple varsity teams, including baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s tennis, volleyball, field hockey, golf and football. He created programming for teams based on individual needs, data collection and analysis and worked to apply results of analysis to set and reach both team and individual goals. During his tenure at Bryant, men’s lacrosse won two NEC Tournament championships, baseball won seven NEC regular season titles and men’s tennis won five NEC Conference championships. Prior to Bryant, Pennini worked as a Strength and Conditioning intern at Appalachian State in Boone, NC. He worked extensively with the football team. Pennini is a native of Millis, Mass. He earned a B.S. in Exercise Science and Health Fitness from Bridgewater State University where he also pitched for the baseball team.
