Biography

Brian Carey officially joined the Oregon State coaching staff in July of 2023. During his second full season in 2025, Carey’s vault squad was highlighted by consistency and adding skills, as multiple student-athletes upgraded their vaults this season. Karlie Chavez debuted a 1.5 on the road at Auburn and earned a career-best 9.900, while Kaitlin Garcia found a groove during the back half of the season, earning no lower than a 9.825 in six of the team’s final seven regular season meets, which included a career-best 9.925 at the Metroplex Challenge. For that success, Carey was named WCGA Region Six (West) Co-Assistant Coach of the Year alongside Michael Chaplin and Kaytianna Kell. Carey led Team USA to gold in the team all-around at the 2022 World Gymnastics Championships held in Liverpool, while the group captured six medals in the individual finals, including gold on vault and silver in the individual all-around, vault, bars and floor competitions. As an individual coach at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, he helped propel Jade Carey to gold in the floor exercise, and was one of the coaches that assisted her on the way to another gold medal in the team final with Team USA in Paris in 2024, with the younger Carey also winning bronze in the vault final mere days later. At the 2019 World Championships in Stuggart, Germany, Carey led Jade to gold in the team all-around and silver on vault, while capturing silver on vault and floor at the 2017 World Championships held in Montreal, Canada.
