Biography

Andy Newman enters his third season as head men's basketball coach with CSUN in 2025-26. Newman is the eighth head coach in the history of the Matadors. Newman has transformed the Matadors into a winning program, helping CSUN achieve numerous records in his first two seasons. CSUN has won 41 games over the past two seasons, the most over a two-year stretch in over two decades. A total of five Matadors have earned All-Big West honors in his tenure with two collecting First-Team accolades. Newman led CSUN to an impressive 22-11 record in 2024-25, tying the school record for overall wins while the Matadors established a new record for conference wins (14), tied the school mark for road wins (10) and matched the D-1 record for wins in a row (7). The 22 wins were the most for the program since the 2000-01 season and marked just the fourth time CSUN had reached 20 wins as a Division I program. CSUN also made school history by competing in the National Invitation Tournament for the first time. Newman's Matadors led the Big West for the second straight season in rebounding in 2024-25, ranking 12th overall in the nation at 40.6. CSUN also broke the school record for rebounding margin (+8.4), which ranked ninth-best in the nation. Additionally, the Matadors were 23rd in the country in defensive field goal percentage (40.4), 26th in turnovers forced per game (14.7) and 30th in assists per game (16.3).
