Associate Head Coach
Former Boston College captain Brendan Buckley enters his eighth season on the BC coaching staff in 2025-26. Buckley was elevated to the position of Associate Head Coach following the 2020-21 campaign. He has helped guide the Eagles to the No. 1 seed in Hockey East in the last two seasons. During that span, Buckley has guided several players to national recognition. In 2020, Alex Newhook became the first player in program history to win the Tim Taylor Award as the Division I National Rookie of the Year. Matt Boldy (First Team), David Cotton (Second Team), Drew Helleson (Second Team) and Jack McBain (Second Team) have also been named All-Americans during Buckley’s tenure. As a student-athlete, Buckley was a standout defenseman for the Eagles after coming in as part of the first class recruited by Jerry York. He was named assistant captain in 1998 before donning the “C” for the Eagles in 1999. Buckley played 158 career games as an Eagle, helping the program to back-to-back Hockey East titles and Frozen Four appearances in 1998 and 1999. Buckley’s previous coaching experience came at UConn, where he served as an assistant coach for three seasons for former BC assistant Mike Cavanaugh. With the Huskies, he focused on recruiting and coaching the defensemen. Buckley was selected by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in the fifth round of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. Assistant Coach
Brent Darnell enters his third season on the coaching staff in 2025-26. Darnell came to the Heights prior to the 2023-24 season after serving as the assistant director of player personnel for USA Hockey's National Team Development Program. Darnell made his IIHF coaching debut as an assistant coach with the U.S. Under-18 Team at the 2023 U18 World Championships in Switzerland, where Team USA captured the gold medal in overtime against Sweden. He coached a total of six incoming Eagles, including five 2023 NHL Draft selections, at the U18 World Championships. Darnell joined the USNTDP in 2019 and served two seasons as an assistant coach for the Under-17 and Under-18 squads. He previously served as the senior director of education for College Hockey, Inc. A native of Canton, Michigan, Darnell played four collegiate seasons at Michigan State and skated in 137 career games for the Spartans before graduating in 2015. He went on to play professionally with the ECHL's Bakersfield Condors that season.

Director of Operations
John Hegarty is in his 32nd year with the Boston College hockey staff. For eight seasons, he served as the team’s equipment manager. Beginning with the 2001-02 season, Hegarty assumed the additional role of Director of Hockey Operations. In his present role, Hegarty coordinates the Eagles’ travel plans, organizes the coaches’ recruiting efforts and manages the team’s state-of-the-art video analysis system. Beginning with the 2020-21 season, Hegarty took over as the program administrator for men’s hockey, a role he also serves with the BC women’s hockey team. Hegarty’s hockey expertise has earned him invitations to work on several USA Hockey tours. In the spring of 1995, he accompanied the U.S. Select Team to British Columbia where it competed in the Kitimat Cup. During the summer of 1995, he served as equipment manager during the Women’s Junior National Team’s tour of Ottawa. A 1994 graduate of Boston College with a degree from the Carroll School of Management, Hegarty has since earned his master’s degree in higher education administration. As an undergraduate, he served four years as a student manager for the football team. In 1992 and 1993, he was the head football manager under head coach Tom Coughlin. John and his wife Jill, also a BC graduate, have a daughter Bridget. They reside in Milton.
