Head Coach
Recognized as one of the nation's top assistant basketball coaches with a proven track record in recruiting and player development, Chris Capko was named Ball State University's 21st head men's basketball coach on March 20, 2026. Previously the associate head coach with Southern Methodist University and active this week with the Mustangs in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship, Capko has spent the past 10 seasons under coach Andy Enfield at both SMU and USC. SMU was lauded this past year for landing the nation's fourth-ranked recruiting class, and with that class the Mustangs reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2017, their first at-large bid since 1993. Capko, who has helped develop 11 NBA players across stops at Marshall, Stetson, Georgia Southern, USC, Florida International and SMU, will begin his duties at Ball State immediately. "Chris Capko is an exceptional basketball coach," said Director of Athletics Jeff Mitchell. "His breadth of experience at the NCAA Division I level, combined with his elite recruiting acumen and expertise in player development, set him apart from an incredibly strong pool of candidates and made him the best coach to lead our program." “We are excited to welcome Chris Capko and his family to our Ball State community,” said Ball State University President Geoffrey S. Mearns. “His strong character, values-driven leadership, and commitment to student-athlete success make him the right choice to lead our program.” Capko wa

"He is very sharp, detailed, organized and someone I trust will carry out with detail, some of the most important parts of our program. Beruk will be dedicated to this program and has a bright future ahead of him as a coach in this business." Prior to Pacific, Asfaw was a graduate assistant at the University of Southern California (USC) for two seasons from 2021-23. In the 2021-22 campaign, the Trojans soared to No. 5 in the nation with a 13-0 start. Assistant Coach
Jordan Surenkamp was hired at Ball State in April 2026 after a season as an assistant coach at Radford and before that nearly a decade of experience in the NBA. "I am excited that Jordan has decided to join our staff at Ball State," Ball State head coach Chris Capko said. "I met Jordan when he was a GA at South Alabama and have seen him work himself through the business. His experience as a G-League head coach will be extremely valuable to me and the staff. Jordan has worked with some of the best coaches in basketball and his experience at both the professional and college levels will benefit the program." Surenkamp served as an assistant coach in 2024-25 with the Birmingham Squadron, a G League affiliate of the New Orleans Pelicans organization. Prior to his time in Birmingham, Surenkamp was the head coach of the Greensboro Swarm, the G League affiliate of the Charlotte Hornets for three years. During his time with the program, over 15 roster players earned and advanced to NBA call ups, two-way contracts and other international opportunities. Before leading the Swarm for three seasons, Surenkamp served for three years with the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets, which included two years as the team’s head video coordinator. He also was named the head coach for the Hornets summer league squad in 2022. Before his time in Charlotte, he began his career in professional basketball with the Brooklyn Nets, which included time as the head video coordinator for their G League affiliate, the Lon

Assistant Coach
Dosanjh was hired at Ball State in April 2026 after serving four seasons as an assistant coach at Mid-American Conference member Western Michigan. "Manny and I have gotten to know each other very well throughout the past five years," Ball State head coach Chris Capko said. "He has an infectious spirit and special ability to relate with student-athletes today. I know he is a relentless worker, top-notch person and one of the best young coaches in the game. His experience in the Midwest and our conference is very important to me and something I know I will be able to lean on. Our program will benefit greatly from Manny and I'm excited for his future at Ball State." The 2024-25 campaign saw Western Michigan return to the MAC Tournament, making it back-to-back appearances in Cleveland for the Broncos for the first time since the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. Junior guard Chansey Willis Jr. paced the MAC in both scoring and assists, and was named to the All-MAC Second Team, the program's first Second Team selection since Thomas Wilder in 2016. The Broncos also continued to dominate the glass, leading the league in offensive rebounding for the third straight season. Western Michigan's 13.2 offensive boards per game ranked 24th in NCAA Division I, and its overall average of 37.8 rebounds was second-best in the MAC and 54th in the country. The Brown and Gold led the league with five Academic All-MAC selections, tied for the most in program history, and set new program records with fou

Assistant Coach
Williams was hired in April 2026 to be part of Chris Capko's first year staff at Ball State after most recently spending three seasons as an assistant coach at Georgia Tech. "I have known Pershin for over 15 years as a friend, colleague and coach," said Capko. "I know how hard he works and have full confidence our program will benefit from his leadership. Pershin has experience at every level of college basketball and will be instrumental in helping us recruit and develop student-athletes who will help us compete for championships in the MAC. He will fit in seamlessly with the rest of the staff to help us hit the ground running." Williams played a major role in re-shaping the Georgia Tech roster prior to the 2023-24 season and had a significant hand in adding a recruiting class for 2024-25 that was ranked the 19th-best in the nation. Williams worked the previous four seasons at Kennesaw State before his time in Georgia Tech and helped head coach Amir Abdur-Rahim build the KSU program into a championship team in the Atlantic Sun Conference and an NCAA Tournament team in 2023. Kennesaw State went 26-9 overall, including 15-3 in the A-Sun, and three Owls earned all-conference recognition after being picked to finish eighth in the preseason conference poll. Prior to his time at Kennesaw State, the Columbus, Ga., native served a three-year stint as the assistant coach at Columbus State University, his alma mater. In his first season with the Cougars, Columbus State captured a shar
