Special Asst. to the Head Coach
Scott Waterman joined the Lobo basketball staff in August of 2025 as Special Assistant to the Head Coach. He came to UNM after six seasons as the head coach of Academy of Art University in San Francisco, where he is the school’s all-time winningest coach. In his first season on the Lobo staff in 2025-26, Waterman helped UNM win 26 games and reach the NIT semifinals. New Mexico finished in the top 50 of the NET and KenPom and set a school record with 3,004 points scored. Waterman built Academy of Art into a Division II power over the his six seasons, winning at least 19 games in each of the past four seasons, including the school’s first two NCAA Tournament appearances in 2022 and 2023. The Urban Knights won the 2022 PacWest Tournament and the 2024 PacWest regular season title, as Waterman was the conference’s 2024 Coach of the Year. In 2021-22, Art U posted a 79-60 win at UC Davis for the program’s first victory over a Division I opponent. He posted a 96-71 record over his six-year tenure before the school discontinued intercollegiate athletics after the 2024-25 season. Prior to becoming the head coach at Academy of Art, Waterman was the Associate Head Coach at Division II Dominican University of California for two seasons from 2017-19. He served as Director of Operations at Dartmouth in 2016-17 after three seasons as Associate Head Coach at Division III Pomona-Pitzer College. Tom Tankelewicz is in his second season as an assistant coach at New Mexico in 2026-27. He joined the Lobo coaching staff after spending the previous three seasons on Eric Olen’s staff at UC San Diego. In his first season on the Lobo staff in 2025-26, Tankelewicz helped UNM win 26 games and reach the NIT semifinals. New Mexico finished in the top 50 of the NET and KenPom and set a school record with 3,004 points scored. During his three seasons as an assistant coach at UC San Diego, Tankelewicz helped lead a Triton offense in 2024-25 that led the Big West and ranked in the top 30 nationally in assist/turnover ratio (4th, 1.80) and effective field goal percentage (29th, .555). Last season, he coached Big West Player of the Year Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones to a Division I school-record 670 points and Tyler McGhie to a school-record 117 three-pointers. Prior to coming to UCSD, Tankelewicz spent the 2021-22 season at Presbyterian, helping lead the Blue Hose to the best non-conference record in school history. He spent five seasons on the staff at UNC Greensboro from 2017-21, as the Spartans had five consecutive 20-win seasons for the first time in program history.
