On April 4, 2023, Director of Athletics Bobby Williams has announced the promotion of Chris Mudge to be the the 20th head coach for the Sam Houston men’s basketball program. Mudge was the first hire to former head coach Jason Hooten’s staff in 2010 and has been a big part of one of the most successful stretches in program history. Over a 13-year span, the Bearkats won 261 games, a conference championship and earned six postseason appearances. In June of 2021 he was promoted to associate head coach. While directing the recruiting efforts for the last nine years, Mudge played an integral part in bringing in this year’s WAC Player of the Year Qua Grant and last season’s first team WAC selection Savion Flagg, as well as 2019 Southland Player of the Year Cameron Delaney, SLC Newcomers of the Year, Jabari Peters (2014) and Kai Mitchell (2019) and 2015 SLC Defensive Player of the Year Michael Holyfield. Prior to joining the Bearkat staff, Mudge served as the assistant coach at Midland College for two years, helping lead the Chaparrals to a 63-7 record and back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national top-10 rankings. He is a graduate of Stony Point High School in Round Rock where he was the starting point guard and led his team to a top-10 ranking in the state. Angres Thorpe joined the Sam Houston staff in the spring of 2025 after spending two seasons at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE). During the 2024-25 campaign, the Cougars won the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament to advance to the NCAA Tournament after going 22-12 and 13-7 in league play. SIUE went 17-16 in Thorpe's first season and 9-9 in OVC play before bowing out in the second round of the conference tournament. Before SIUE, Thorpe had a four-year run on the staff at Buffalo, where he spent the 2022-23 season as the associate head coach. The Bulls compiled a 70-49 record with Thorpe on staff. In the 2020-21 season, Thorpe helped the Bulls to a 16-9 record in a COVID-19 shortened season. The Bulls earned a trip to the MAC Championship game and an appearance in the NIT, just the second in school history. In 2019-20, his first season with the Bulls, Thorpe helped the Bulls to a 20-12 record, including a win on the road at DePaul in nonconference play. Thorpe was an instrumental part of the Bulls' game planning and helped develop several all-conference players. Thorpe has also made coaching stops at Kansas City, Toledo, Green Bay, Saint Louis, Ball State, Division II Lewis and Division III Loras. A native of Chicago, Thorpe was a two-time All-Catholic League performer at Fenwick High School. He went on to become a four-year letterman at St. Leo College (Fla.), where he earned his bachelor's degree in business management.

In the 24-25 season Coach Fobb helped coach and develop Lamar Wilkerson, who was named a first team All-C-USA member. In 23-24, Fobb helped lead Sam Houston to a regular season Conference USA outright championship in its inaugural season after being picked 6th in the preseason poll. The Bearkats went 13-3 in conference play, including a perfect 8-0 home record at the Bernard Johnson Coliseum. Overall, the Bearkats amassed 21 total wins. Fobb helped coach and develop Lamar Wilkerson, who was named a first team All-CUSA member, Davon Barnes, who was named a second team All-CUSA member, and Cameron Huefner, who was named honorable mention. With Fobb in charge of rebounding and assisting with the defense scheme, the Bearkats ranked second in offensive rebounding and third in defensive rebounds. The Bearkats were ranked in the top five in CUSA in the defensive stats, second in opponent 2-point field goal percentage (47.9), third in opponent 3-point field goal percentage (32.8) and third in adjusted defensive efficiency (99.3) according to KenPom in 2023-24. Prior to Sam Houston, Fobb spent five seasons serving as the head coach of Mayde Creek High School in Katy ISD. In two seasons in Branson, Missouri, he helped build a program that would tally a 61-3 record, recruit and develop four McDonald's All Americans and have 16 players who would be ranked in the ESPN top 100. During the summer, White also was an assistant coach for Mokan Elite 17u which would go on to win a Nike EYBL Peach Jam Championship in the summer of 2022 and have 12 players sign Division 1 scholarships. White spent eight seasons in the junior college ranks as an assistant at Panola College (2012-15), New Mexico Military Institute (2015-16), and Kilgore College (2017-2021). As an associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for Kilgore, the Rangers had the most first-team all-conference players and finished second in wins only trailing Trinity Valley by three. White helped recruit the 2020 Kilgore freshmen class that would amass a 49-9 record, two Region 14 conference tournament championships, two national tournament appearances, five all conference selections (four first team and one second), two All-Americans and would reach No. 2 in the national rankings in 2022. White also had Texas high school coaching stops at Fort Bend Elkins (2008-11), Temple High School (2011-12) and Trinity School of Texas (2007-08).
