Head Coach
Pepperdine all-time great Jonathan Winder -- an NCAA champion and a former national player of the year -- returned to Malibu ahead of the 2022-23 school year as the ninth head coach in the storied history of the Waves’ men’s volleyball program. He enters his fourth season at Pepperdine’s helm in 2025-26. Winder led the Waves to an MPSF Championship and NCAA semifinal appearance in his third year at the helm in 2025. The Waves racked up 12 ranked wins on the season, as Winder was named MPSF Coach of the Year following the successful campaign. The Waves earned wins over No. 2 UCLA and No. 5 USC to claim the MPSF title at home, the program's seventh MPSF crown and first since 2022. The Waves went on defeat fourth-seeded Loyola Chicago in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Winder is currently 54-35 throughout his first three seasons as Head Coach for the Waves. He has coached seven players to AVCA All-American honors during his tenure, an MPSF Player of the Year in Jaylen Jasper in 2023, MPSF Freshman of the Year acclaim for Ethan Watson in 2024 and Cole Hartke in 2025, and nine separate players to All-MPSF awards. Winder's second season at the helm saw another winning season for the program at 17-11, including five ranked victories which featured wins over No. 11 USC and No. 6 Stanford. Head Coach Emeritus
Widely recognized as one of the premier coaches in the history of the sport of volleyball, Dr. Marv Dunphy directed Pepperdine to four NCAA men’s volleyball titles and concluded his 34th and final season as the Waves’ head coach in 2017. He remains involved with the program as its head coach emeritus. Dunphy, who held a career record of 612-277 (.688)*, was noted for his highly technical approach to the game and diligent training methods. He was the 2005 National Coach of the Year and a three-time MPSF Coach of the Year. As a result of his training, 22 different Waves earned 38 All-American first team accolades. Overall, 45 Pepperdine players were named All-Americans 75 times under Dunphy’s direction. Six different athletes would earn either AVCA or Volleyball Magazine National Player of the Year honors a combined nine times in Bob Ctvrtlik (1985), George Roumain (1998, 1999), Brad Keenan (2002, 2003), Sean Rooney (2004, 2005), Jonathan Winder (2007) and Paul Carroll (2009). Dunphy also had a long, successful coaching tenure with the U.S. National Team. The American squad maintained a No. 1 world ranking and compiled an impressive overall record of 197-31 (.864) during his time as coach in the 1980s. Additionally, the team won every major international tournament: the 1985 World Cup, the 1986 World Championships, the 1987 Pan American Games and, most importantly, the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea. Associate Head Coach
Matthew Pollock was elevated to associate head coach of the Pepperdine men’s volleyball team in May 2024. The former Waves’ standout just completed his fifth season as an assistant coach with Pepperdine in 2024. “Matt is beyond deserving of this title as he has tremendously represented the Pepperdine men’s volleyball program,” said Head Coach Jonathan Winder at the time of his promotion. “He is incredibly loyal, passionate and cares deeply about each student-athlete. He brings an energy and joy into the office and onto the court every day. His high level of execution and creativity in teaching has led our student-athletes to maximize their potential. Matt is the common denominator to the men’s volleyball program’s success over the past several seasons, and I am excited to see that continue into seasons to come.” The team posted a 17-11 overall record last season with a fifth-place finish in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in 2024. Assistant Coach
Will Craft was hired as an assistant coach for the Pepperdine men’s volleyball team in July 2023. He brought with him a wealth of playing and coaching experience at both the professional and collegiate levels, having most recently served as the head men’s volleyball coach at Dominican University, an NCAA Division III institution competing in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. He was named NACC Coach of the Year this past season. Prior to coaching at Dominican, Craft was a graduate assistant for the Carthage College men’s volleyball program, helping the Firebirds to an NCAA DIII Championship crown in 2022. He primarily focused on team culture, while developing scouting and practice plans and breaking down film. Before hitting the sidelines as a coach, Craft played professionally as an outside hitter. Most recently, he was with SVG Lüneberg in Germany, helping the squad to a bronze medal at the German Bundesliga during his time. Prior to that, he played for Nordenskov UIF Volley in Denmark where he served as a team captain and led the team to a silver medal at the Danish Volley Ligaen and a bronze at the Danish Cup. His first professional experience out of college in 2017 was with Saaremaa Võrkpalliklubi in Estonia. Craft was an AVCA All-American for Carthage, located in Kenosha, Wis., where he helped the squad to a deep run in the 2016 NCAA Division III Championships including a quarterfinal appearance.
