Biography

Luke Ryan joined the Indiana swimming and diving staff as the primary sprints coach in the summer of 2020. In 2023, he was promoted to assistant head swimming coach and director of recruiting. Since Ryan joined head coach Ray Looze’s staff, Indiana has won two Big Ten titles on the men’s side and finished in the top six at the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships. The women’s team has placed top three at Big Tens each season and top-15 at the national meet, highlighted by a program record seventh-place finish at the 2023 championships. Last season, the men placed fourth at the NCAA Championships led in the pool by Brendan Burns national title in the 100-yard backstroke and seven All-America finishes by fifth-year senior Van Mathias, who posted dramatic year-over-year drops in the 50 freestyle (20.05 to 18.89), 100 freestyle (43.70 to 41.33) and 100 breaststroke (54.74 to 50.57). After the 2022-23 season, Ryan served as an assistant coach for the Tunisian national team at the Fukuoka 2023 World Aquatics Championships, specifically working with IU swimmer and 2020 Olympian Ahmed Hafnaoui. At the championships, Hafnaoui won world titles in the 1,500 free and 800 free and earned a silver medal in the 400 free, posting top-five times in all three events. Ryan came to Bloomington after spending the 2019 campaign as a volunteer assistant coach with Ohio State. While with the Buckeyes, Ryan served as the primary women’s recruiting coach for 15 states and was actively involved
