Sean Smith

Biography

Sean Smith was named the 9th Head Coach of the CBU Cross-Country and Track program in July of 2024. During the 2025 cross-country season, Coach Smith helped lead the men's team to a national ranking as high as 15th and swept the WAC Championships with both men's and women's teams. The men earned their sixth consecutive title while the women earned their fifth overall since joining the conference in 2018. Coach Smith was named WAC Men's and Women's Coach of the Year with 17 all-conference finishers. In his first season with the Lancers, he guided the men's cross-country team to its second Nationals berth and highest finish ever with a 13th place finish, earning first-ever male Cross-Country All-Americans in Valentin Soca and Zouhair Redouane. Previously, Smith was head coach of Azusa Pacific cross country and an assistant coach for Cougar track & field, helping guide the women's program to NCAA Division II national titles in 2021 and 2023. In fall 2022, he led the men's cross country team to their first Nationals qualification in the NCAA era. Smith's coaching career began at Chico State (2014-2017), where the Wildcats won three NCAA trophies and produced eight All-Americans in cross country. He also coached at Gillette College (NJCAA DI) and Notre Dame de Namur. As a student-athlete, Smith competed at Lewis University and the University of St. Francis, earning All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors and competing at the 2014 GLVC Indoor Track & Field Championship.
